Subject Leadership
The quality of subject leadership is a key factor in enabling schools to improve D&T teaching Ofsted, February 2004 Being a successful subject leader in any subject demands the acquisition of a wide range of skills and personal qualities additional to those of teacher. The role of the subject leader is complex.
At one level it involves working with other heads of department to provide a coherent curriculum for students. At a second level it means representing the subject at meetings with senior managers and governors, making a case for curriculum time, resources, new courses etc. Thirdly, there is the responsibility of leading and managing the staff team responsible for teaching the subject. Above all else, a subject leader is expected to lead with vision - and manage and make decisions, as well as being an excellent teacher.
