Addressing literacy within D&T

Literacy remains vital and at the heart of the new Primary Strategy which aims to build on the success of the National Literacy Strategy. One of the immediate priorities for literacy is securing the place of speaking and listening both as a key foundation for literacy and also as an essential component of all effective learning.

Key elements of literacy development that arise as opportunities within D&T include:

- speaking
- listening
- discussing
- debating
- justifying
- reasoning
- interpreting/analyzing
- explaining
- evaluating
- presenting
- self assessment
- peer assessment
- group collaboration
- understanding and using technical vocabulary

The National Literacy Strategy (NLS) is at the heart of the drive to raise standards in schools. The DCFS Standards website supports teachers and others working to improve literacy in schools. It makes available guidance and documents about the NLS, provides direct access to professional development materials as well as information about new initiatives and events to support improvements in literacy.

Relevant material about the development of skills across the curriculum (Key Stages 1-3) in Wales is available on the ACCAC website.
