Addressing numeracy within D&T

The National Numeracy Strategy (NNS) is at the heart of the drive to raise standards in schools. The DfE Standards website supports teachers and others working to improve numeracy. It makes available guidance and documents about the NNS, provides direct access to professional development materials as well as information about new initiatives and events to support improvements in numeracy.

Key elements of numeracy development that arise as opportunities within D&T include:

- measuring ratios and proportions
- estimating
- mathematical modelling
- calculating
- data handling
- use of graphs and charts
- working accurately and precisely
- dealing with tolerances

Relevant material about the development of skills across the curriculum (KS1-3) in Wales is available on the ACCAC website.
