Key to developing departmental schemes of work is a good understanding of the National Curriculum 2008 Programmes of study. The new programme represents considerable developments in how the subject is defined and also what is required to be taught. The starting point for schools is look at two key features of the new curriculum:

  • The Importance Statement
  • The Key Concepts

The revised version of the Importance Statement provides a good starting point to stimulate reflection on the nature of design and technology as a subject and how it plays a central part in all pupils’ education. Developing from the importance statement are the Key Concepts. These concepts underpin the study of design and technology. Pupils need to understand these concepts in order to deepen and broaden their knowledge, skills and understanding.

The resources available here are designed to stimulate thinking and enable teachers to consider the key features of the new curriculum and where they need to develop their current schemes of work to reflecting the new requirmements.

 Activity 1

This activity breaks down the importance statement into key features. In pairs or groups, examine each part of the statement and identify the key features. Then examine the design and technology key concepts and cross reference these by putting their code in the appropriate column. A completed version is also included, referenced against the key concepts.

 Activity 2

This activity enables a department to explore what it is currently doing to address each of the key concepts and how it could strengthen each aspect. It is very useful in developing a team’s understanding of the implications of the new programme and also focuses attention on the areas which are most in need of development.

Activity 3

The non-statutory cross curricular dimensions reflect the major ideas and challenges that face society and have significance for individuals. They can provide powerful unifying themes that give learning relevance and help young people make sense of the world.

  • Identity and cultural diversity
  • Healthy lifestyles
  • Community participation
  • Enterprise and entrepreneurship
  • Sustainable futures and the global dimension
  • Technology and the media
  • Creativity and critical thinking
This activity can be used to encourage thinking about developing cross curricular activity. The cross curricular dimensions are particularly useful as a means of focussing thinking and relating to the content of the other national curriculum subject areas.

 Activity 4

This is a short RAG assessment activity that can be used to stimulate a department’s thinking about where it is in its development of D&T provision. It also requires teachers to think about the purpose of D&T and its contribution to the whole curriculum.
