Simon Tarrant

Simon is currently Head of Design Technology at St John’s School Leatherhead (4 days per week). He has experience of OCR, AQA and CIE qualifications at GCSE, iGCSE, A-level and Pre-U in Design Technology, 3D Design, Product Design and Design Engineering. He tutored undergraduates and postgraduates in Design Engineering at Imperial College and the Royal College of Art during a paid sabbatical. Prior to that he spent 11 years as Head of Design Technology at Winchester College, a tenure that included two successful ISI Inspections. He previously taught at the Royal Grammar School, Guildford and has been an Examiner of AQA A-level DT: Systems & Control.

He has run Greenpower, F1 in Schools, Young Engineers, Young Enterprise and STEM, and led numerous domestic and international trips including one to Italy. His professional design and manufacturing experience includes Supergalaxy Chess (a 3D-printed titanium chess set), Enstruct (a mass-produced educational resource), and the Streetrower (Fiat Design Prize runner up).

His training in H&S dates back to his role as a Sponsored Construction Project Management Trainee at Bovis Lend Lease (1997-2004) alongside studying Engineering (MEng) at the universities of Cambridge and Nottingham.

Simon is passionate about creativity in education and supports DT departments looking to inspire the next generation of designers, architects and engineers. In relation to H&S his approach is to encourage and facilitate positive engagement of staff and pupils, finding the fun and enjoyment along the way.  He is currently training to become a RDTHSC.
