Design and Technology Summer School 4th and 5th July 2019

The D&T Association Summer School for 2019 is being held for third year at the state of the art facilities of De Montfort University, Leicester - take a look at this video

Our Summer School will take place at De Montfort University.  A big thank you to the University for opening their doors again and hosting this exciting 2 day event. Running alongside the two day event we are hoping that there will be a suppliers exhibition for you to attend and speak with exhibiting organisations. In previous years we have had exhibitors such as Awarding organisations, Denford, Boxford, Technology supplies, Tech soft, Practical Action and many more. A sample agenda from last years workshops can be seen below. 

Day 1 (Sample Agenda)

Morning

  • Developing D&T and creating a conducive environment for D&T in your school 
  • Sustainability and the 17 UN Sustainable Development goals, through the medium of Textiles  
  • Top Tips for Product Design - Tom Corker
  • Extending the use of your laser cutter to create innovative 3 D products
  • Awarding Org (OCR) presentation 
  • User-Centred Design (UCD) in D&T teaching 

Afternoon

  • Being a D&T teacher is like playing a game of monopoly’, would you agree? Engaging ideas for inspiring creativity in KS3 and KS4
  • How can Design and Technology benefit from a STEM style approach to learning? 
  • How to start, fund and lead a successful STEM Club within your school and the exciting uses of Drone Technology 
  • Fabric design and manufacture 
  • Using Crumble in Key Stage 3 design challenges 
  • Awarding Org (AQA) presentation 
  • User-Centred Design (UCD) in D&T teaching

Day 2 (Sample Agenda)

  • Embedding D&T Theory topics into engaging projects and learning experiences: a practical workshop 
  • Thinking for Learning 
  • Textile performance analysis and testing
  • Introduction to CAD modelling: using 3D modelling and rendering as an element of the iterative design process 
  • Engaging activities for KS3 & 4 

Afternoon

  • Arduino prototyping platform for learning electronic product design 
  • From idea, iterative design and prototype and 3D Printing to evaluation for GCSE NEA portfolio
  • Let them Design 
  • The 2018/19 GCSE Contextual Challenge and how to go about it 
  • The role of a buyer, merchandiser, garment technologist in the retail business
  • The 7 Year A Level/5 Year GCSE, Key Stage 3 mapping and getting through it all on a budget!
