Approaches to Design Conference Success
Published 7th December 2018
On the 30th November 2019, the Design and Technology Association partnered with The Design Technology & Engineering department at Highgate School in London, to organise the 'Approaches to Design Conference' mainly for teacher educators but some A-level D&T students from Highgate were also able to attend and benefit from some of the practical workshops.
A big thank you to our speakers from Arkwright Engineering Scholarships, Smallpeice Trust and The Engineering Development Trust with keynotes from Dyson and Loughborough University. There were a choice of practical workshops such as; User Centred Design, Pneumatics and Electronics. The aim was to improve practice and provide excellent and inspiring Design Technology & Engineering teaching.
Quote from one of the A-level D&T students, who attended: It was the best day ever, the highlight was listening to Hugo Wilson’s story and experiences. It has really inspiring me and was very encouraging to hear what we are learning in the D&T department at Highgate, is being used in Industry today.
Quote from Hugo Wilson– “The Key engineering principles, design processes and invaluable practical experience that this department (D&T @ Highgate) gave, provided me with a solid foundation not only for my degree in engineering but ultimately for my career in research, design and development at Dyson.”
Quote from Andy Thomson, Head of D&T – “Since starting at Highgate, I have also aimed to ensure DTE students are inspired and prepared for participation in tomorrow’s rapidly changing world. To have a very successful, former DTE student come back and talk with such expertise and passionate towards Design Technology was so amazing and confirms that what we are teaching in the department is relevant and inspiring.
Quote from Head of Design at Latymer Upper school, who attend the conference– “It has given me the confidence to start and explore micro controllers further and I currently embedding it into our SOW’s”
Quote from another D&T teacher delegate– “was a very inspiring conference, it was great to collaborate and share ideas with other educators. It is amazing to see Design take so many different forms from User-centred design at one end, to electro-pneumatic circuits on the other. Good time was had by all.Back to News
