DfE definition of STEM subjects

Statement on DfE definition of STEM subjects

The Design & Technology Association were somewhat shocked to read the content of yesterday’s DfE A Level statement

In amongst the fantastic news of student’s achievements across STEM related subjects and increased entry numbers to universities, the DfE clarified their definition of STEM by stating “We define STEM subjects as: biology; chemistry; computing; mathematics (including statistics); further mathematics; and physics.”

This definition defines STEM as essentially being Maths and Science (including Computer Science) with absolutely no mention or recognition of the importance of design & technology or Engineering. This definition has come without any consultation or warning of any sort and obviously needs to be explained.

Association members can rest assured that we will be urgently asking questions at the very highest level and we will report back on any conversations held in due course.

Chief Executive, Design and Technology Association
