DfE publishes revised content for GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition

On 12th February Minister for School Reform Nick Gibb announced the revised content for GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition which will be taught from September 2016. He said the key changes are:

“Food preparation and nutrition is a new GCSE that draws and builds on the best of current food-related qualifications. This GCSE will place a greater focus on knowledge, including scientific knowledge of food and nutrition, and will enable students to apply this when preparing and cooking meals.

Ofqual confirmed the following assessment arrangements:

“Food preparation and nutrition GCSE: The assessment for this subject has been split evenly to cover 50% exam and 50% non-exam assessment. This reflects the balance of practical and theoretical knowledge and understanding required in the subject content.”

Awarding organisations will now use this subject content to develop specifications which should be in school by September 2015, for first teaching the following September. The D&T Association will provide guidance in due course.
