D&T teacher recruitment and retention

D&T teacher recruitment and retention - The Annual Report of Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Education, Children’s Services and Skills 2014/15

If you have not done so, the D&T Association urges you, and your colleagues, to sign the ‘Designed and Made in Britain…?’ campaign petition which asks Government to urgently address the D&T recruitment challenge.  The importance of doing so is highlighted by the publication today (1st December 2015) of the Annual Report from Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector Sir Michael Wilshaw.

The critical shortage of new D&T teachers entering the profession is identified (see Fig 21, right) and the report states:

At the same time, recruitment of new teachers is increasingly falling behind target, with STEM subjects particularly affected.

The number of vacancies and temporary appointments is also identified and whilst the text in the report focuses on the jump in science vacancies the accompanying chart (see Fig 23, right) shows the challenging situation in D&T.
