Independent Review of Curriculum and Assessment Arrangements in Wales

Published 3rd December 2015

On 25th February Professor Graham Donaldson published ‘Successful Futures,’ his report and recommendations on the review of curriculum and assessment arrangements from Foundation Phase to Key Stage 4 in Wales. Download his report here:

The Review proposes six Areas of Learning and Experience:

  • Expressive arts
  • Health and well-being
  • Humanities
  • Languages, literacy and communication
  • Mathematics and numeracy
  • Science and technology.

The Review states, “The Science and technology Area of Learning and Experience will draw on physics, chemistry and biology, engineering, design technology (food, textiles, resistant materials), craft, design, graphics and, importantly, computer science, learning from the 14–19 Learning Pathways domain of mathematics, science and all aspects of technology. There are links between this Area of Learning and Experience and, for example, the Humanities (business and industry), Mathematics and numeracy (considering costs and benefits) and Health and well-being (medical uses of technology) Areas of Learning and Experience.”

Suprisingly it fails to mention electronics, systems and control, robotics, or CAD/CAM.

The Welsh Government has said, “Further information on how you can get involved will be made available over the coming weeks.”
