Innovating D&T:West Midlands (iD&T:WM)

Published 7th September 2016

Innovating D&T:West Midlands ( iD&T:WM) is an exciting new initiative aimed at helping schools implement a modernised D&T curriculum. It is designed to provide D&T teachers with the necessary professional development and ‘tools’ to meet the needs of students and employers. This initial research and development project will investigate the impact that intervention and support provided by a dedicated, locally based D&T advisor can have on the quality of teaching and learning in school. It also aims to raise the profile of the subject with wider stakeholders, in particular, senior leaders in school, employers and parents.

Schools in the West Midlands were invited to apply and were interviewed. Eight ‘hub’ schools were selected. and will be working with Heidi Ambrose-Brown who has been appointed to run the initiative during 2016-17. Using the D&T Association’s Self Review Framework, together with the Key Resources curriculum materials, teachers will plan and deliver progressive KS3 schemes of work, that will help prepare students for the new single title D&T GCSE.  New on-line CPD courses are also planned which will be trialled as part of the programme.

It is anticipated that the results of this initiative will be made more widely available to the D&T community and that further regions will become involved.
