A set of PowerPoint presentations and an accompanying display poster which show a range of techniques for constructing switches at Key Stage 2. Some of these techniques may also be used with younger children.

The presentations come in two versions. One is aimed at teachers and can be used for training purposes or reference. The other is simplified to titles and pictures for the children to follow in class under the teacher’s instruction. You may choose to use just the relevant parts of the PowerPoint as there are many slides included. They include Tips for Teachers which are handy hints to help you complete each project, Budget Busters which are ideas for saving money and Inspiring Ideas which give examples of contexts that can be used for each switch.

There are also suggestions for possible designing and making projects and guidance on creating simple and more complex switches. Handmade switches can be used for controlling a range of components, including bulbs, buzzers and motors.

The poster has illustrations of switches and the components that make them, together with prompt questions and suggestions for their use.
