Freeform – 3D CAD using Autodesk Inventor
Ages 11-14 years
First published 2015
This project teaches students to use organic modeling tools to create an ergonomic handled concept product. Using Autodesk Inventor’s ‘Freeform’ tool, students will reference basic dimensions in order to create a concept handle shaped appropriately for its intended use. The students will design and develop using CAD iteratively, and it is intended that through an iterative design process various models are made, with improvements.
Autodesk’s 123D Make software is used to create manufacturing files for the models. Although these could be manufactured using a laser cutter, more traditional methods including scissors and craft knifes are more than adequate.
This CD-based product includes:
• PowerPoint presentations of six lesson plans.
• Project overview.
• Nine instructional videos guiding students though the design process using Autodesk Inventor and sketching techniques.
• CAD files for all stages of creating the ergonomic handle.
• Rendered images and photographs.
Inventor Professional is free to student and educators.
