The focus of this unit is on movement and structures and it includes strong links to science and ICT. Children are encouraged to develop their enquiry, investigative, and sorting skills and their knowledge and understanding of mechanisms, different materials, structures and forces by exploring the movement of full-sized garden seating. They will make choices to meet the needs of a character of their choice when designing and making a prototype of a garden seat. They will also make garden wind spinners as an FPT to develop their cutting, joining and finishing skills and their ability to follow instructions.
The resources include a children’s garden seat design booklet and instructions on how to make a wind spinner; a unit of work adapted from Playgrounds and including science and ICT aspects, and a helpsheet full of tips and ideas for IDEAs, FPTs and D&M as well as homework activities. The associated PowerPoint presentation includes plenty of prompt questions and takes children through designing and making a garden chair that moves. It then introduces wind spinner designs and the instructions for making one for the garden.
