This project focuses on designing and making a toy fairground ride to develop their understanding of how motors, gears and pulleys can be used to create and control movement. The project also encourages pupils to utilise and develop a broad range of skills including product analysis (through the use of handling collections, computer software and a real-life fairground experience), target user research and computer control. Children use these skills to make their own design decisions and to set their own design criteria. It asked pupils to consider things they will need to think about before they set the design criteria, such as: What type of ride will it be? Who will be the user? How will it need to work to suit the user? and How will it need to look to suit the user? The process also enhances their mathematical skills through the understanding and application of ratio, and their literacy skills through the use of a range of non-fiction text types.

The resource contains PowerPoint presentations looking at exploring fairgrounds, a design challenge and using computer control in their models; a helpsheet, scheme of work, user questionnaire and six worksheets to guide them through the process.
