Through this project children learn about the structural construction of a range of musical instruments. They investigate a range of instruments, and experiment with a variety of ways of making sounds. They then design and make a working instrument for a particular purpose concentrating on making xylophones, guitars and drums to a high standard. The unit offers strong links with several subjects including music and science.
The resource features two PowerPoint presentations investigating drums and xylophones, and investigation sheet and evaluation sheet, instructions on cutting wood safely and the original QCA unit of work. Also included is a case study article from D&T Practice 6.2006 showing how this took place in one primary school.
