Making frames for motorised projects
Age 9-11 years
First published 2014

This Year 5 or 6 PowerPoint presentation, from material kindly provided by Hampshire County Council, includes a step-by-step guide through making a framework to house a motor that can be adapted for a range of uses. Once children have been successfully led through the design and manufacture of the unit they are then well placed to incorporate it into any moving machine, including fairground rides or moving vehicles. Successful electrical and computer control activities can be combined with the creative adaptation of the basic unit to produce a range of creative results.

The presentation includes examples from schools of children’s designs and products in which they have designed and made several different outcomes, including a Ferris wheel, roundabout and ‘crab claw’!.

The PowerPoint should be used in conjunction with other teaching on electrical circuits and components, and can be adapted to use as classroom display material as well as being instructional.
