In this project children look at safety clothing and the properties of materials through a variety of investigative activities and focused practical tasks leading to designing and making a jacket, tabard or waistcoat to help Teddy be seen when out in the dark and help him be seen. To allow children greater choice they could identify another item of clothing (e.g. trousers, arm bands) that they could make or another doll or toy to wear it.
The unit covers children looking at a selection of safety clothing including jackets and basing their design on their investigations into the choices that have been made when making some/all of these items and who they have been designed for. It also covers marking out, cutting and joining pieces of fabric.
The resources include eight PowerPoint presentations covering investigative and practical aspects as well as evaluation of products and a pupil record book. There are worksheets, an adapted unit of work and a vocabulary list. The slides from the presentations can be printed out as classroom displays.
