Based on non-woven textiles and linked to CAD/CAM and graphics, this offers inspiration and practical advice to design and make 3D containers. Design inspiration comes from the work of Hepworth, Gaudi and others, and teachers are free to adapt the work to suit the locality or students’ interest.

The resource contains pdf and PowerPoint slides on:

  • Overview
  • Teachers’ notes
  • Applying ‘structures’ with ideas for a design brief and practical responses to try out
  • Ideas for getting students involved in fabric construction
  • Environmental issues
  • Resources and stockists

It has full instructions for each example to be made including step-by-step guidance on making a Hepworth inspired double box file, Gaudi inspired pen pots, and an ‘urban’ pen organiser. There is also an image bank of inspirational photos.

The processes involved include dye sublimation printing, fusing fibres to make non-woven textile fabrics from spun polyester based materials and working with nets and mathematical shapes to develop ideas.

This resource is an additional resource to the D&T Key Resources range of materials. Key resources have been developed to help teachers teaching students in years 7, 8 and 9 by providing a full set of lessons and support materials.
