  • Are you a teacher that has a D&T specialism in D&T Product Design?
  • Do you want to develop your understanding of how specialist D&T knowledge should be taught through the new single title D&T GCSE?
  • Are you planning to develop a specialist route for students to follow covering the new GCSE?

The new single title Design and Technology GCSE provides many opportunities for the subject and students who study it. It will still require teachers who have developed specialist bodies of skills and knowledge that formed the basis of previous specifications. Although the examination and assessment will address a wider range of D&T subject knowledge, it still provides opportunity for students to follow their interests and courses can be developed and organised to facilitate this.

This course is not particular to a individual Awarding Organisation D&T GCSE specification. It is applicable to all teachers which AO they choose. This course focuses on how to deliver the D&T GCSE content (which is the same for all exam boards) with a starting point of product design, should you be a current specialist in product design.

The new qualifications referred to categorises, types and properties of the following materials, to which a list of technical principles apply. In the specifications, these translate into:

• papers and boards

• natural and manufactured timber

• ferrous and non-ferrous metals

• thermoforming and thermosetting polymers

• textile based materials

• electronic and mechanical systems

It is a requirement that students develop an understanding of each of the technical principles through working with at least one material category or system. Not all of the principles relate to every material category or system, but all must be taught.

This course concentrates on how the principles can be delivered through the use of product design, previously covered in D&T: Product Design, examined for the last time in 2018.

Course outcomes:

  • Be familiar with the subject content of the new GCSE specifications, their structure and key features
  • Identify new resources and understand how your existing resources can be used to support the new specifications
  • Have developed an understanding of how specialist D&T subject knowledge contained in the specifications can be developed through classroom activity
  • Developed an initial plan for teaching the subject content leading up to the examination
  • Considered how the contextual challenge can be facilitated and how students wishing to incorporate electronic and mechanical systems can be supported
