The new single title D&T GCSE developed for first teaching in September certainly provides the opportunity for being a significant milestone in the history of the subject. Following on and building on the intentions of the National Curriculum design and technology programmes of study, this revised qualification moves the subject further toward the original and subsequent definitions of the subject. The new GCSE is different. It will not be possible to carry on simply delivering current content without change.

At a time when D&T is increasing threatened as a consequence of performance measures, teacher shortage and financial constraints, it is vitally important that D&T teachers fully embrace the spirit of the reform and develop their department’s ability to provide a positive and enhanced experience for their students. To do this, teachers need to understand what is intended, know how to organise the curriculum they teach and be familiar with the new requirements in terms of both coverage of content and its assessment.

This course will provide you with an opportunity to work with other teachers and professionals to explore the new single title GCSE D&T and how it can be taught. The course will:

  • explore and compare the Awarding organisations’ individual specifications and how they differ
  • consider possible approaches to organising D&T student groups and delivery models
  • explore how key stage 3 might be aligned with GCSE
  • develop an understanding of what iterative designing in action involves
  • Identify the distinctly new aspects of the content and consider ways of addressing them
  • how best to address preparation for the contextual challenges
  • explore the changes to the examination and assessment of non-examined assessment
  • begin to create your own departmental development plan for implementing the new GCSE

The D&T Association reserves the right to make some changes to the above content to reflect the final examination specifications.
