This hands-on, one-day course will prepare D&T/STEM subject leaders to manage health and safety in their schools and develop a range of practical skills and techniques.

 The first part of the course will familiarise course members with the H&S standards and enable them to prepare a personal H&S portfolio to demonstrate how H&S is managed in their school. The topics to be covered include: knowledge of essential H&S publications, preparing risk assessments, teaching and learning strategies for D&T, H&S training and organising training for colleagues, and the care and maintenance of tools and equipment.

The second part of the course will enable course members to develop their personal confidence and expertise using a variety of tools, equipment and materials, matched to the requirements of the 2014 National Curriculum and the D&T Association scheme of work, ‘Projects on a Page’. Under the guidance of an experienced STEM/DT specialist and D&TA registered health and safety consultant, course members will make teaching aids/skills boards that can be used to support children’s learning in the classroom and during training sessions with class teachers and support staff.  Areas covered during the course include, mechanisms, structures and electronics.

No prior knowledge is required for attendance at this course. On conclusion of the training, course members will be accredited by the D&T Association for completion of the Primary H&S Training Standards.

By the end of the one day course, each delegate will;

  • Be awarded nationally recognised certification/accreditation through the D&TA scheme
  • Have learnt new or developed existing practical skills/techniques and assembled teachings aids to use in the classroom
  • Be confident in designing new and exciting challenges for your pupils and recognise opportunities for numeracy, problem solving and teamwork
  • Be aware of health and safety requirements and know how to complete risk assessments to ensure the safe delivery of STEM/D&T activities in schools

You will need to bring your own lunch and refreshments.

Cost of accreditation is included within the price.
