The introduction of the contextual challenge represents a significant change as a new means of assessment in the design and technology GCSE. But it also offers new freedom and opportunity to students and their teachers. This course had been designed to help you steer your students through the exercise, remaining firmly within the Awarding Organisation’s (AOs) regulations to help ensure they have the best possible experience.

The day has been developed by experts at the D&T Association who working with DfE, were closely involved in the 2015/16 GCSE reform process. But importantly, the accompanying resources and suggested approaches have been created by a small group of practicing D&T teacher experts working full time in school.

The course will use exemplar challenges, like those to be published in June 2018, but the advice provided will support this and future year’s work. Indeed, it will also be helpful when supporting earlier Key Stage 3 activity.

Attending the course will enable you to clarify:

  • the individual AO requirements
  • what the regulations allow in terms of providing support and advice
  • the use of techniques and stimuli to encourage design creativity and innovation
  • the range of possible outcomes that might be represented in the prototypes
  • what the supporting portfolio of evidence might contain

These courses are scheduled to be run by the teacher experts who have developed them. They are relevant to all those teaching the new single title GCSE even if their school does not have a year 10 group entered for the first presentation in 2019.
