We work with businesses of all types within the D&T sector, who contribute to schools and help teachers and pupils with their understanding of what is required in a commercial and technologically developing world.
The Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (Alupro) represents the leading aluminium packaging producers and reprocessors in the UK. We are working to meet, and exceed, government recycling targets for aluminium packaging. In 2015 55% of all aluminium packaging sold in the UK was collected for recycling. Across Europe the industry aims to reach 70% recycling by 2020.
We developed the Alu D&T Challenge as part of our efforts to achieve these targets. We want to enthuse and educate tomorrow’s engineers, designers, consumers and recyclers about the versatility of aluminium, and the contribution this endlessly recyclable metal can make to a sustainable lifestyle. We have run the Challenge on behalf of the UK aluminium industry since 2012.
The Alu D&T Challenge supports the D&T curriculum for 11-14 year olds. The free online resource, available to download on www.learningaluminium.co.uk, contains lesson plans, stimulus sheets and guidance for teachers. It includes design briefs based on challenges faced by designers, engineers and manufacturers in industry today.
Each autumn term schools can enter their pupils’ designs in a national competition to win team and individual prizes for the students and their school. Winners and their teachers are invited to a celebration event in the spring term.
The Alu D&T Challenge is available on our online education hub, www.learningaluminium.co.uk, which also features free resources for students from seven to 14 years of age. These include the Aluminium Life Cycle, a cross-curricular resource linked to D&T, English and ICT.
