Published 6th December 2023

Donna Isaac, a teacher from Wallingford School in Oxford shares her experience with the Sketching and Rendering Masterclass offered by Seymourpowell in collaboration with The Design & Technology Association. This 'Sketching & Rendering in Concept Design' Masterclass, takes D&T teachers through the process of concept design at Seymourpowell.

Motivation

Donna's decision to enrol was driven by a desire to strengthen her team's skills and confidence in sketching and utilising diverse materials. The school's funding for INSET provided a unique opportunity to invest in this CPD opportunity. Donna and her team aimed to enhance their capabilities to better equip their students with a comprehensive skill set and ensure her students developed confidence in this area.

Workshop Experience

The masterclass began with a focus on sketching techniques, shadows, highlights, marker application, and digital media usage. Donna and her team found the practical tasks during the workshop instrumental in swiftly generating design ideas and prototyping. The seamless integration of skills learned in the morning was applied effectively in the afternoon session, showcasing the practicality of the workshop.

Flexibility and On-Demand Learning

Donna praised the course's flexibility, especially the on-demand nature of the video content. The short and focused videos allowed her and her team to plan their learning around busy schedules. The accessibility of the material beyond the workshop period enabled continuous learning and reference.

Integration into Classroom

Particularly noteworthy was her implementation of workshop techniques with a new class in Year 11, aiming to boost their confidence in sketching and drawing. The underlay and design development conceptual design approach significantly enhanced the students' understanding and confidence.

The course not only empowered her as an individual teacher but also contributed to the collective growth of her D&T Key Stage Three team.
