Staff Training Day

We had a fantastic staff training day recently which helped us delve into D&T activities to gain a better understanding of the type of projects that can be utilised in schools.

Our Director of Education Ryan Ball and Curriculum Trainers Lol Conway and Paul Woodward led a jam-packed day which consisted of micro:bits, structures, electronics, Laser cutting and food-based projects.

Design and Technology is about developing practical solutions to problems through creativity and innovation. It involves thinking about the purpose and function of products and systems, and how they can be improved. It also requires an understanding of the properties and behaviours of materials, and how to use them effectively.

It was incredibly beneficial for all staff at the D&T Association to get hands-on with the type of activities employed in classrooms and gain a deeper understanding of the subject. We all felt it gave a real understanding of the challenges teachers face in delivering D&T when it isn’t their primary field of expertise. They need to be able to understand the concepts themselves and be able to deliver them in an interesting and engaging way.

There are a number of ways that teachers can learn how to deliver design and technology in the classroom. They can attend CPD sessions and workshops (delivered in a range of flexible options), read books and articles (we have a fantastic, recommended reading resource available free to members – see download link below).

Many teachers find that attending CPD sessions is the best way to enhance their skills and learn about new teaching methods and approaches. They can also learn about the latest technology and resources that are available.
