This course is ideally suited to secondary teachers with limited experience teaching design and technology.

Over the course of the three days, we will discuss aspects of the subject, its context and purpose, key content and skills and how to plan, deliver and monitor a broad and balanced D&T curriculum for your school.

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the requirements of the National Curriculum acknowledging these are a starting point to a wider curriculum provision
  • Develop a vision for D&T in your school
  • Planning to ensure progression, stretch and challenge
  • How to successfully fit D&T into a crowded curriculum
  • Discover and plan for the required resources to support the delivery of your departments' curriculum
  • Ensure your curriculum is fit for future learning and employment
  • Gain confidence in the use and application of specialised processes

By the end of the course, delegates will:

  • Have a greater understanding of how D&T fits effectively within the school curriculum and the content that is required to deliver your curriculum
  • Acquire a knowledge of the design thinking that underpins the teaching of Design and Technology in the secondary school
  • Understand the key stages of secondary education and how to plan a 5 or 7 year D&T curriculum
  • Have greater confidence in their long-term plans and sequencing of lessons
  • Have a greater understanding of the D&T content and how to deliver a context-based design curriculum
  • Develop greater confidence in the use of CAD, CAM and visual communication
  • Experience working with a range of materials and processes

  • Key stages of education
  • Key content and learning: systems and processes
  • Working with materials: timbers, polymers and CAD

Day 2 (28th August)

  • Design thinking
  • Contextual approaches to design
  • Managing NEA and theory content at exam level
  • Working with materials: textiles, electronics and modelling materials

Day 3 (29th August)

  • Long, mid, and short-term curriculum planning
  • Progression in learning
  • Common processes, tools, and machinery
  • Systems & Control and CAM

Meet Your Trainer

Paul Woodward – Curriculum Consultant

Paul has been teaching D&T for almost 30 years with most of those years as a Head of Creative Arts Faculties or as Head of D&T. Following a degree in 3D design, Paul initially trained for the Post 16 sector, so he has extensive experience of teaching A Level D&T, but he has taught the subject from KS2 onwards in a wide variety of schools ranging from Pupil Referral Units to Prestigious International Boarding schools. Paul’s MA is in Education specialising in Professional Development in Teaching and Learning which led to him working as a consultant, course designer and presenter for D&TA alongside his industry and teaching roles…
