Full day, face to face course in Manchester

Using computers to program, monitor and control products is a key element in the key stage 2 curriculum and one that schools often find hard to understand and implement. This hands-on, full day course is ideally suited to primary school D&T coordinators and key stage 2 D&T teachers. During the day we will use the popular ‘Crumble’ microcontroller to gain confidence in programming it with students, ensuring progression across the key stage, in line with Ofsted Inspection criteria, and explore units of work that can incorporate this exciting element.

Course Objectives:

  • Understand what microcontrollers and associated elements are, and gain confidence in programming them with students.
  • Understand curriculum requirements and how to ensure progression across key stage 2.
  • To explore project / unit ideas incorporating programming and control
  • Explore practical teaching methods in the classroom using visual props, visualisers and more.
  • Gain confidence to teach programming and control in D&T from year 3 to year 6.

By the end of the course, delegates will:

  • Have greater confidence in teaching programming and control in D&T
  • Be able to program a crumble microcontroller that can control products and that monitor changes in the environment.
  • Design and make outcomes that could be tasked to students in the classroom.
  • Have greater confidence in their planning of units and lessons incorporating programming and control.
  • Take away, from this course, resources and files to use back in the classroom.
  • Get hands-on with the crumble controller, a range of inputs and outputs and explore how they can be used in products with your students

You will be required to bring a laptop* with free crumble software installed ready to go. We will send you a link to the free software when you have booked your place.

*Windows laptop, Chromebook or Macbook all suitable.
